How It Works

State the current facts. After الآن پول کافی ندارم, the sentence اگر پول داشتم، این کتاب را می‌خریدم imagines a different present. داشتم is past-shaped possession; می‌خریدم is the imagined result.

Other verbs. اگر نزدیک‌تر زندگی می‌کردی، بیشتر همدیگر را می‌دیدیم imagines different present living arrangements. Both clauses use می‌ past forms. An unreal state can instead use بود: اگر اینجا بودی، کمک می‌کردی.

A real past habit can look the same. آن سال اگر وقت داشتم، به کتابخانه می‌رفتم can describe what actually happened whenever time was available. آن سال and the narrative context make this a past routine; it is not automatically a regret.

Keep a missed past separate. Imagining a different completed past often calls for اگر وقت داشتم with an explicit past context or a fuller past-perfect condition such as اگر آمده بودی. Do not label every past-shaped اگر sentence as either present or past without context.

    I do not have time now. If I had time, I would come with you.

  2. اگر اینجا بودی، به من کمک می‌کردی.

    If you were here, you would help me.

    Read as an unreal present in a context where the listener is elsewhere.

  3. اگر نزدیک‌تر زندگی می‌کردی، بیشتر همدیگر را می‌دیدیم.

    If you lived closer, we would see each other more.

  4. آن سال اگر وقت داشتم، به کتابخانه می‌رفتم.

    That year, whenever I had time, I went to the library.

    This example describes a real repeated past situation.
