من آشپزی یاد گرفتم = I learned cooking. مادرم به من آشپزی یاد داد = my mother taught me cooking.

How It Works

Learning. این واژه را یاد گرفتم names the acquired knowledge as an object. The compound remains یاد گرفتن even when گرفتن changes for tense or person.

Teaching. این واژه را به سارا یاد دادم names the content with را and the learner with به. Do not use را merely because Sara is a person: her role here is the recipient of the teaching.

Use the whole meaning. The physical meanings take and give do not translate these clauses correctly by themselves. Similar-looking compounds can have other meanings and patterns, so this pair is a model for reading roles, not a universal word-building rule.

Questions and negation. Keep the nonverbal part while changing the light verb: یاد نگرفتم, یاد ندادم, and چه چیزی یاد گرفتی؟.

  2. مادرم آشپزی را به من یاد داد.

    My mother taught me cooking.

  3. سارا این بازی را به بچه‌ها یاد می‌دهد.

    Sara teaches this game to the children.

    بچه‌ها are the recipients after به, while بازی is the content object.

  4. هنوز این قاعده را یاد نگرفته‌ام.

    I have not learned this rule yet.

    The perfect and negation stay on the verbal member.
