per
The Preposition Per
Per means for, and it also means through a place.
How It Works
Per has two common jobs at this level.
- For: it shows who gets something. Un cafè per Maria. (A coffee for Maria.)
- Through: it shows a place you pass. Passam per Carcassona. (We pass through Carcassonne.)
The word never changes, but it joins with lo and los into pel and pels. Before la and las it stays apart: per la, per las. Before a vowel, the article drops its vowel: per l'amiga (for the friend).
Per has other jobs, and you meet them later. Before an infinitive it means in order to, and per çò que means because.
