donc, doncas

So and Then

Level 2

Donc and doncas draw a conclusion: so, therefore.

How It Works

Donc and doncas connect a result to what you just said. They mean the same thing, and writers use both.

OccitanEnglish
Fa fred, doncas restam a l'ostal. It is cold, so we stay at home.
Es tard, donc partissèm.It is late, so we leave.
Restam doncas a l'ostal. So we stay at home.

Put a comma after the first clause. The word can open the second clause or follow its verb. It does not change the verb. The reason comes first and the result second. With perque (because) the order is reversed: Restam a l'ostal perque fa fred. Write donc or doncas, not the Catalan doncs.

Examples (4)

  1. Fa fred, doncas restam a l'ostal.

It is cold, so we stay at home.

    Doncas introduces the result.

  2. Es tard, donc partissèm.

It is late, so we leave.

Donc links the situation to its result.

  3. Ai set, doncas bevi d'aiga.

I am thirsty, so I drink water.

The second clause follows from the first.

  4. Restam doncas a l'ostal.

    So we stay at home.

    Doncas can follow the verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Catalan word.

Fa fred, doncs restam a l'ostal.
Fa fred, doncas restam a l'ostal.

Doncs is Catalan. Occitan writes donc or doncas.
