One and Two with Gender

Level 1

One and two have a masculine and a feminine form.

How It Works

GenderOneTwo
masculineun libredos libres
feminineuna tauladoas taulas

Choose the form from the gender of the thing you count. The owner does not matter, only the noun: a man's two chairs are still doas cadièras, because cadièra is feminine.

Three and the other numbers do not change: tres libres, tres taulas. The noun after two or more is plural.

Learn each noun with its article, because the gender tells you un or una and dos or doas. This is why two o'clock is doas oras.

Examples (3)

  1. Ai una taula e dos libres.

I have a table and two books.

Una goes with taula and dos with libres.

  2. Ai doas sòrres.

    I have two sisters.

Doas agrees with the feminine sòrres.

  3. I a un òme e doas femnas.

There is a man and two women.

Each count uses the gender of its noun.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine dos with a feminine noun.

    Ai dos sòrres.
    Ai doas sòrres.

Sòrre is feminine, so two is doas.
