tornar + Infinitive
Doing Something Again
Tornar plus an infinitive says again: Torni dire, I say it again.
How It Works
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| tornar alone | to come back | Torni a Tolosa. |
| tornar + infinitive | to do again | Torni legir. |
Writers put nothing between the two verbs: the dictionaries give tornar dire (to say again) and tornar far (to do again). Tornar a goes with a place, as in tornar a l'ostal.
The pattern works in every tense: Maria tornèt dire (Maria said again). In the compound past it takes aver, which keeps it apart from coming back: Ai tornat legir lo libre (I read the book again), but Soi tornat a Tolosa (I came back to Toulouse).
To ask someone to repeat, use the plural command: Tornatz dire, se vos plai!
