Common Adjectives Before the Noun

Level 2

Four very common adjectives usually go before the noun.

How It Works

Most adjectives follow the noun, but four very common ones usually stand in front of it: bon (good), bèl (beautiful, nice), grand (big, great) and pichòt (small). The article comes first: un bon cafè, una bèla jornada. Each adjective agrees with its noun.

With a plural noun, de replaces un and una: de bons amics (good friends), de bèlas jornadas (beautiful days). Other adjectives, such as colors and nationalities, keep their place after the noun: un libre blau.

Examples (4)

  1. Es una bona jornada.

    It is a good day.

Bona agrees with the feminine noun jornada.

  2. Avèm un pichòt ostal.

    We have a small house.

    Pichòt stands before ostal.

  3. Es una bèla vila.

    It is a beautiful town.

Bèla is the feminine of bèl.

  4. Ai de bons amics.

    I have good friends.

In the plural, de replaces un.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to make the adjective agree.

    Es una bon jornada.
    Es una bona jornada.

Bon is the masculine form. Before the feminine noun jornada it becomes bona.
