यस / त्यस

This and That Before Postpositions

Level 2Sounds Like yasa ra tyasa

यो and त्यो change to यस and त्यस before an ending.

How It Works

यो means this and त्यो means that. When a small ending follows, the word changes.

WordBefore an endingExample
योयसयसमा, यसको, यसलाई
त्योत्यसत्यसमा, त्यसपछि, त्यसले

यस and त्यस always have an ending or a noun after them: यसमा, त्यस दिन (that day). As the subject of a sentence, use यो and त्यो: यो चिया हो, त्यो घर हो.

The same change happens before ले: यसले and त्यसले.

Common fixed phrases to learn: त्यसपछि (after that), त्यसैले (so), यसपछि (after this), त्यसमा (in that), यसको दाम (the price of this).

Words like यहाँ and त्यहाँ never change. Only यो and त्यो do.
