Level 1Sounds Like namastē ra dhan'yavāda

Two words for greeting and thanking, both useful at any time of day.

How It Works

नमस्ते is a greeting for every time of day. It means hello when you meet and goodbye when you part. People often press their palms together as they say it.

PhraseUse
नमस्ते।hello, goodbye
नमस्ते, तपाईंलाई कस्तो छ?hello, how are you?
धन्यवाद।thank you
धेरै धन्यवाद।thank you very much

To name the person you thank, add लाई to the person: तपाईंलाई धेरै धन्यवाद.

For a longer goodbye add a polite request: नमस्ते, फेरि आउनुहोस्. This means goodbye, please come again.

You will hear नमस्कार, a more formal greeting, on the news and in speeches. In daily life नमस्ते is the safe choice.
