उसको / उनको / उहाँको
His and Her
His or her changes with the respect you show to that person.
How It Works
Nepali does not have separate words for his and her. The word shows respect instead.
| Respect | His or her | Example |
|---|---|---|
| plain | उसको | उसको घर नजिक छ। |
| middle | उनको | उनको नाम सरिता हो। |
| high | उहाँको | उहाँको घर पोखरामा छ। |
| they | उनीहरूको | उनीहरूको घर ठूलो छ। |
For several respected people, say उहाँहरूको.
The verb follows the same level. उहाँ takes -नुहुन्छ, and उनी takes -छन् for a man and -छिन् for a woman.
Like मेरो, these words change with the noun that follows: उहाँका साथीहरू (his or her friends), उहाँकी आमा (her mother).
Do not mix उनी, which means she or he, with उनको, which means her or his. उनी names the person you are talking about, and उनको shows whose something is.
