Just Because

Level 5Sounds Like daimā

-दैमा means just because: पैसा हुँदैमा means just because someone has money, and the rest of the sentence says that this is not enough.

How It Works

-दैमा is built like the -दै form with मा added. A consonant stem takes it directly: गर्दैमा, पढ्दैमा. A vowel stem becomes nasal first: हुँदैमा, खाँदैमा, आउँदैमा.

  • पैसा हुँदैमा means just because there is money.
  • पढ्दैमा means just because someone studies.

The main clause says what does not follow. It often ends in -ने होइन, -दैन or -दैनन्. The speaker is arguing against a quick conclusion: having money does not guarantee happiness, and getting angry does not solve a problem.

Do not mix this with -दै, which means doing one thing while doing another (हिँड्दै गीत सुन्छु, I listen to songs while walking). -दैमा carries the extra idea of just because, so it needs a main clause that answers that idea.

Examples (4)

Having money does not make a person happy.

हुनु becomes हुँदैमा, and -ने होइन shows that the result does not follow.

Studying a lot does not mean you know everything.

पढ्दैमा is just because of studying; the main clause is negative.

You cannot get to know someone just by looking once.

हेर्दैमा is just because of looking.

Getting angry does not solve the problem.

रिसाउँदैमा is just because of getting angry.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners use -दैमा when they mean while doing.

For two actions at the same time, use -दै. -दैमा means just because.
