waqt li

While

Level 4

A temporal waqt li clause supplies a surrounding interval.

How It Works

Write waqt li as two words before a finite clause. Its situation supplies an interval containing the main event; the activities need not share exact beginnings or endings. Each clause retains its own subject agreement.

The connector does not itself mark progression. A form of kien with qed and an imperfect explicitly marks past activity in progress. Imperfect predicates can also describe recurring overlap, such as reading during a regular wait for a bus.

Compare waqt li Pawlu kien qed jaħsel il-platti, “while Pawlu was washing the dishes,” with waqt il-laqgħa, “during the meeting.” A noun complement uses waqt without li. The expanded filwaqt li can contrast claims, giving English “whereas”; contrasting preferences need not involve simultaneous actions.

Examples (4)

  1. Pawlu qara l-gazzetta waqt li kont qed naqra l-aħbarijiet.

Pawlu read the newspaper while I was reading the news.

The main event occurs within the speaker's reading interval.

  2. Rita sajret waqt li Pawlu kien qed jaħsel il-platti.

Rita cooked while Pawlu was washing the dishes.

    Different subjects retain independent agreement.

  3. Waqt li nistenna l-karozza tal-linja, naqra l-aħbarijiet.

While I wait for the bus, I read the news.

    Imperfect predicates describe recurring overlap.

  4. Anna tħobb il-kafè, filwaqt li David jippreferi t-te.

Anna likes coffee, whereas David prefers tea.

The expanded connector compares preferences rather than timing actions.
