u
Joining with and
U stays unchanged; each joined element keeps the agreement its structure requires.
How It Works
U means “and” and joins words, phrases or clauses. Two people joined as the subject of a shared predicate can take plural agreement. When complete clauses are joined, each keeps the subject and verb forms appropriate to its meaning. Joined descriptions retain agreement with their referent.
Compare Il-kamra nadifa u kwieta, “the room is clean and quiet,” with Il-kamra nadifa u l-ħalib kiesaħ, “the room is clean and the milk is cold.” The first joins two feminine singular descriptions; the second joins clauses with different subjects. Event order can suggest succession or a result, rather than an invariant meaning “and then.” Reversing clauses may change that relationship. Jew joins alternatives; imma or iżda makes a contrast explicit.

The coordinated people take plural verbal agreement.
- Il-kamra nadifa u l-ħalib kiesaħ.
The room is clean and the milk is cold.
Each clause has its own subject and adjective agreement.
- Lara daħlet u fetħet it-tieqa.
Lara went in and opened the window.
The order naturally suggests successive events.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Introduce additive coordination across participants, descriptions, and events. Shared-subject coordination can select plural agreement, while joined clauses retain their own grammar; succession arises from event order and context.
