Offering Alternatives

Level 2

Place jew between the alternatives.

How It Works

Jew connects alternatives and does not change for person, gender, or number. It can join nouns, prepositional phrases, or clauses. Preserve the article, preposition, and agreement required within each alternative. Repeating shared material can clarify the choices.

Trid tè jew kafè?, “Do you want tea or coffee?”, offers alternative objects. In Il-laqgħa se tkun fid-dar jew fl-uffiċċju, “The meeting will be at home or in the office,” each location has its own preposition–article combination.

Se taqra int jew se naqra jien?, “Will you read, or will I read?”, joins clauses with different person agreement. Interpret the alternatives in their conversational context; “or” alone does not specify every logical implication. Embedded alternative questions may also use jekk, “whether,” and an interrogative -x that is not negative.

Learn This First

Introduce alternatives between objects, locations, and complete clauses. Repeated material can clarify the choices, while context supplies their interpretation; the mention of embedded-question -x is explicitly distinguished from negation.
