lanqas

Not Even or Neither

Level 5

Scalar lanqas commonly combines with ma without -x; la ... u lanqas excludes coordinated alternatives.

How It Works

Scalar lanqas means ‘not even’. It presents an excluded alternative as noteworthy or minimal in the situation. The particle remains unchanged; predicates retain subject agreement. Scalar lanqas generally triggers omission of verbal -x.

Lanqas minuta ma kelli llum. means ‘I did not have even a minute today’: a minimal amount is excluded. Lanqas Nina ma setgħet torqod. means ‘Not even Nina could sleep’. Nina is the emphasized participant. Setgħet is feminine singular; torqod refers to her here but also serves second-person singular.

La ċempel u lanqas wasal. means ‘He neither phoned nor arrived’. This paired construction excludes two activities, uses la in the first part, and omits verbal -x. Interpret the coordinated predicates together. Context supplies the expectation that makes a scalar exclusion striking; lanqas itself does not specify why the person or quantity matters.

Learn This First

Distinguish noteworthy exclusion of a minimal quantity or participant from coordinated exclusion of two actions. The lesson introduces the paired la construction locally while keeping scalar emphasis dependent on context.
