Root-initial k replacement
In standard Malay, the prefix meN- undergoes a sound change when it meets a root starting with the letter k. Most often, the k disappears and is replaced by the nasal sound ng (forming meng-).
How It Works
The prefix meN- is used to form active transitive verbs. When the root word begins with k, follow these rules:
- Standard Replacement: If the root starts with k followed by a vowel, the k is dropped and replaced by ng.
Example: karang (compose) → mengarang. - Monosyllabic Roots: If the root has only one syllable, the prefix becomes menge- and the k is retained.
Example: kod (code) → mengekod. - Consonant Clusters: If the k is followed by another consonant (like kr, kl, kh), the k is retained.
Example: kritik (criticize) → mengkritik. - Loanwords: Modern borrowings from English often keep the k to maintain clarity.
Example: kategori → mengkategorikan.
Special Case: kaji
The root kaji has two forms to distinguish meaning:
1. mengaji: To recite the Quran or study religion (follows the rule).
2. mengkaji: To research or investigate scientifically (exception to the rule).
Examples (5)
- Dia sedang mengarang sebuah novel baharu.
He/She is currently composing a new novel.
Word by Word: He/She [progressive] compose [a] novel new.
The root word is 'karang'. Since it starts with 'k' followed by a vowel, the 'k' is replaced by 'ng', resulting in 'mengarang'.
- Kita perlu mengkaji punca masalah ini dengan teliti.
We need to research the cause of this problem carefully.
Word by Word: We need [to] research cause problem this with careful.
The root is 'kaji'. In a scientific or research context, the 'k' is retained ('mengkaji') to distinguish it from religious recitation ('mengaji').
- Sila mengunci pintu sebelum keluar.
Please lock the door before going out.
Word by Word: Please lock door before exit.
The root is 'kunci'. The 'k' is replaced by 'ng' to form 'mengunci'.
- Pihak kerajaan sedang mengkategorikan data tersebut.
The government is currently categorizing that data.
Word by Word: Side government [progressive] categorize data that.
The root 'kategori' is a loanword. The 'k' is retained to keep the word recognizable.
- Dia sedang mengkritik hasil kerja saya.
He is criticizing my work.
Word by Word: He [progressive] criticize result work I.
The root 'kritik' starts with a consonant cluster 'kr', so the 'k' is not dropped.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the 'k' in native Malay words.
Saya suka mengkira wang.Saya suka mengira wang. For native words like 'kira' (count), the 'k' must be dropped and replaced by 'ng'.
Writing 'ng' and 'k' together for standard roots.
Dia mengkarang lagu.Dia mengarang lagu.Do not keep the 'k' if you have already added the 'ng' sound for standard roots; the 'k' is replaced, not supplemented.
