Root-initial s replacement
In Malay, the meN- prefix (active voice) undergoes a specific sound change when it meets the letter s: the s disappears and is replaced by ny (forming meny-).
How It Works
The meny- allomorph is a specific transformation within the meN- prefix system. To become proficient in this rule, you must distinguish between native roots and specific phonetic exceptions.
1. The Basic Rule (S + Vowel):
When a root word begins with s followed by a vowel, the s is deleted and replaced by ny. This applies to native words and older, nativized loanwords.
- sapu (sweep) → menyapu
- sewa (rent) → menyewa
- saman (summons/fine) → menyaman
2. The Monosyllabic Exception:
If the root has only one syllable, the menge- prefix is used instead, and the s is retained.
- sah (valid) → mengesahkan
- syok (enjoyable) → mengesyokkan
3. When 's' is Retained:
The s is not replaced in the following cases, usually taking the men- prefix:
- Consonant Clusters: When 's' is followed by another consonant (e.g., stabil → menstabilkan).
- Digraphs: When 's' is part of the 'sy' sound (e.g., syukur → mensyukuri).
- Modern Loanwords: Recent borrowings often retain the 's' for clarity (e.g., sabotaj → mensabotaj).
4. Register Differences:
While mandatory in formal contexts, colloquial Malay often drops the prefix entirely (e.g., 'Dia susun buku' instead of 'Dia menyusun buku').
Examples (4)
- Ibu sedang menyapu sampah di luar rumah.
Mother is sweeping the rubbish outside the house.
Word by Word: Mother [progressive] sweep rubbish at outside house.
The root 'sapu' (sweep) starts with 's', so it becomes 'menyapu' when the active prefix is added.
- Kita perlu menyimpan dokumen ini dengan selamat.
We need to store this document safely.
Word by Word: We need [prefix]-store document this with safe.
The root 'simpan' (store/keep) changes to 'menyimpan'.
- Dia menyusun buku-buku itu di atas rak.
He is arranging those books on the shelf.
Word by Word: He [prefix]-arrange books those at top shelf.
The root 'susun' (arrange) becomes 'menyusun'.
- Syarikat itu mensabotaj projek kami.
That company is sabotaging our project.
Word by Word: Company that [prefix]-sabotage project our.
Because 'sabotaj' is a loanword, the 's' is retained and the prefix 'men-' is used instead of 'meny-'.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the 's' in native Malay roots (Over-regularization).
Saya mensapu lantai.Saya menyapu lantai. For native roots where 's' is followed by a vowel, like 'sapu', the 's' must be replaced by 'ny'. Learners often forget this nasalization.
Applying 's' replacement to monosyllabic roots.
Dia menyahkan berita itu.Dia mengesahkan berita itu.Roots with only one syllable, like 'sah', do not follow the 's' to 'ny' rule. They always use the menge- prefix.
Replacing 's' in consonant clusters or digraphs.
Kerajaan menyetabilkan ekonomi.Kerajaan menstabilkan ekonomi. If 's' is part of a consonant cluster (st-) or a digraph (sy-), it is never replaced. The root remains intact with the men- prefix.
