Per-...-an Nouns

Level 3

The per-...-an circumfix turns roots into nouns that represent a place, a system, a field of industry, or the result of an action.

How It Works

The per-...-an circumfix is a productive tool in Malay for creating complex nouns. Its functions are divided into several key categories:

  • Place or Location: It identifies a specific area related to the root. For example, rumah (house) becomes perumahan (housing area/estate).
  • Field or Industry: It denotes a sector of activity. For example, ikan (fish) becomes perikanan (fishery/fishing industry).
  • System or Result: It refers to a structured arrangement or outcome. For example, atur (arrange) becomes peraturan (regulation/rule).
  • Collection or Grouping: It refers to a collection of items related to the root. For example, alat (tool) becomes peralatan (equipment).
  • Result of an Action: It often describes the outcome of a ber- verb. For example, bertemu (to meet) results in a pertemuan (a meeting).
  • Abstract Concepts from ber- Verbs: It derives abstract concepts from verbs with the ber- prefix that are based on adjectives or nouns. For example, bersama (together) becomes persamaan (similarity), and berbeza (to differ) becomes perbezaan (difference).

Morphological Rules & Verb Associations:
1. Verb Association & Semantic Distinction: A key rule is that per-...-an nouns generally correspond to verbs with the ber- prefix and often denote a result, event, or institution. In contrast, peN-...-an nouns generally correspond to verbs with the meN- prefix and primarily focus on the process or act of doing something, although many have lexicalized to also mean the tangible result of that process. This creates minimal pairs such as persatuan (an association, from bersatu) vs. penyatuan (the act of unification, from menyatukan), or pertemuan (a meeting, from bertemu) vs. penemuan (the act of discovering, or the discovery itself, from menemukan).
2. Association with memper-...-kan/i Verbs: The per-...-an circumfix can sometimes correspond to complex transitive verbs with the memper-...-kan and memper-...-i prefixes. For example, mempertahankan (to defend) becomes pertahanan (defense), and mempertunjukkan (to show/perform) becomes pertunjukan (a performance/show). Note that this is not an absolute rule, as many of these verbs form nouns using other affixes like peN-...-an (e.g., memperkenalkan → pengenalan).
3. Merging (Peleburan): If the root word starts with 'r', the 'r' in the prefix per- and the 'r' of the root merge into a single 'r' (a process called peleburan). Example: runding (discuss) → perundingan (negotiation).
4. Dissimilation: Similar to the be- allomorph rule, the prefix per- becomes pe- when the first syllable of the root contains the specific sound sequence 'er' (the e-pepet vowel followed by 'r'). Example: kerja (work) → pekerjaan (job/work). It does not apply to other 'r' sounds or consonant clusters.
5. The 'pel-' variant: In a few specific words, per- changes to pel-. The most common is ajar (learn/teach) → pelajaran (lesson/education).
6. No Nasal Assimilation: Unlike the peN-...-an circumfix, per-...-an does not cause nasal assimilation. The first letter of the root word is never dropped or mutated. For example, satu (one) becomes persatuan (association), keeping the 's', which contrasts with penyatuan (unification) where the 's' is dropped. For most other consonants, the prefix simply remains per- (e.g., perbuatan, perjanjian).

Examples (5)

  1. Kawasan perumahan ini sangat sunyi.

This housing area is very quiet.

Word by Word: Area housing this very quiet.

'Perumahan' is derived from 'rumah' (house) to indicate a collective residential area.

  2. Sektor perikanan penting untuk ekonomi negara.

The fishing industry is important for the country's economy.

Word by Word: Sector fishery important for economy country.

'Perikanan' refers to the entire field or industry of fishing, derived from 'ikan' (fish).

  3. Kita mesti mengikut peraturan sekolah.

We must follow the school regulations.

Word by Word: We must follow regulation school.

'Peraturan' (regulation) comes from 'atur' (to arrange), representing a system of rules.

  4. Perjalanan dari Kuala Lumpur ke Melaka mengambil masa dua jam.

The journey from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka takes two hours.

Word by Word: Journey from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka take time two hour.

'Perjalanan' (journey) is the noun form of the verb 'berjalan' (to walk/travel).

  5. Perundingan antara dua negara itu telah berjaya.

The negotiation between the two countries was successful.

Word by Word: Negotiation between two country that already successful.

Note how 'per-' drops its 'r' because the root 'runding' starts with 'r', forming 'perundingan'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'pelajaran' (lesson) when you mean the teaching.

Different MeaningPelajaran guru itu sangat menarik.
    Pengajaran guru itu sangat menarik.

The sentence is fine, but it means the teacher's lesson. For how the teacher teaches, use pengajaran.

  • Confusing per-...-an with peN-...-an when referring to a deed or action.

    Pembuatan jahatnya akhirnya terbongkar.
    Perbuatan jahatnya akhirnya terbongkar.

While 'pembuatan' is a valid word meaning 'manufacturing' (from the transitive verb 'membuat'), it cannot be used for a 'deed' or 'action'. The correct word is 'perbuatan' (from the intransitive verb 'berbuat'). The prefix 'per-' in per-...-an is stable and does not undergo nasalization.
