Reduced Be- Allomorph

Level 2

The prefix ber- changes to be- (dropping the 'r') when the root word starts with the letter r or contains the sound 'er' in its first syllable.

How It Works

The be- and bel- allomorphs are systematic rules in Malay morphology. They occur in three specific environments:

1. Initial 'r': When a root word begins with 'r', the 'r' from the prefix is dropped to avoid a double 'r' sound.
Example: ber- + rambut becomes berambut (having hair).

2. First Syllable 'er' (CerC): When the first syllable of the root contains a schwa followed by 'r' in the same syllable (a 'CerC' pattern), the prefix 'r' is dropped.
Example: ber- + kerja (ker-ja) becomes bekerja (to work). Note that if the 'r' is in the second syllable, like ber- + terus + -an, the prefix remains berterusan.

3. The 'bel-' variation: This is a rare allomorph found in specific words where the 'r' changes to 'l'.
Example: ber- + ajar becomes belajar (to study) and ber- + unjur becomes belunjur (to stretch one's legs).

Following these rules helps you become proficient in Standard Malay (Bahasa Melayu Baku), as using the full ber- in these cases (like *berkerja) is considered grammatically incorrect.

Examples (5)

  1. Dia sedang bekerja di pejabat.

He/She is currently working in the office.

Word by Word: He/She [progressive marker] work at office.

The root 'kerja' starts with an 'er' syllable, so 'ber-' becomes 'be-'.

  2. Adik saya sudah berambut panjang.

My younger sibling already has long hair.

Word by Word: Younger-sibling my already have-hair long.

The root 'rambut' starts with 'r', so the prefix 'r' is dropped, resulting in 'berambut' (not *berrambut).

  3. Burung-burung itu beterbangan di langit.

The birds are flying about in the sky.

Word by Word: Birds those fly-about at sky.

The root 'terbang' has 'er' in the first syllable, so the prefix reduces to 'be-'.

  4. Sila hantar borang ini beserta dokumen asal.

Please submit this form along with the original documents.

Word by Word: Please send form this along-with document original.

The root 'serta' contains the 'er' sound, triggering the reduction to 'beserta'.

  5. Kereta itu beroda empat.

    That car has four wheels.

Word by Word: Car that have-wheels four.

Since 'roda' starts with 'r', the prefix 'ber-' becomes 'be-'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the full 'ber-' prefix with roots containing 'er'.

    Saya berkerja di bank.
    Saya bekerja di bank.

Learners often over-regularize the prefix. Because 'kerja' has an 'er' syllable, the 'r' in the prefix must be dropped.

  • Spelling words starting with 'r' with a double 'r'.

    Dia berrambut hitam.
    Dia berambut hitam.

When 'ber-' is added to a root starting with 'r', one 'r' is dropped. Writing 'berrambut' is a common spelling error.

Learn This First

To understand the be- allomorph, you must first be familiar with the standard ber- prefix used for basic activity verbs. The be- form is a specific variation that occurs with a small set of common roots like 'kerja' (to work) and 'ajar' (to learn/teach), which are essential for early vocabulary development.
