Eastern Maithili Around Saharsa and Purnia
Eastern Maithili uses छै and गेलै where the standard writes अछि and गेल.
How It Works
Maithili is spoken over a wide region. In Saharsa, Purnia and farther east, speakers use forms with -ै far more than the Darbhanga standard does.
| Eastern speech | Darbhanga standard | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| छै | अछि | is |
| छलै | छल | was |
| गेलै | गेल | went |
| कएलकै | कएलक | did |
- The eastern forms are not mistakes; they are the way people there speak.
- The Darbhanga standard uses these -ै forms in casual talk only.
- Do not mix both styles in one text.
When you read a story set in the east, expect -ै forms in dialogue and sometimes in narration. When you write, choose one style and keep it. For learners, the standard remains the base.
