की नहि at the end of a question asks "or not?"

How It Works

Say the sentence as a statement and add की नहि.

ई कलम चलैत अछि।ई कलम चलैत अछि की नहि?

A plain yes-or-no question has only a rising voice, or one की: अहाँ चाह पिबै छी की? Adding नहि makes it more direct. The speaker says: tell me which.

The same word also works inside a longer sentence: हमरा कहू, अहाँ जाएब की नहि (Tell me whether you will go or not).

Do not mix it up with the choice word कि in चाह लेब कि कॉफी? That कि joins two different options. की नहि joins one option with its opposite.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi या नहीं.

    अहाँ आएब या नहीं?
    अहाँ आएब की नहि?

    या नहीं is Hindi. Maithili uses की नहि.
