एहि / ओहि

This and That Before Postpositions

Level 2Sounds Like ēhi ā ōhi

Before a noun with a postposition or a time word such as दिन, ई becomes एहि and ओ becomes ओहि.

How It Works

PlainBefore a postposition
ई घर बड्ड पैघ अछि।एहि घर मे बड्ड जगह अछि।
ओ गाम सुन्दर अछि।ओहि गाम सँ बस अबैत अछि।

So you say ई घर (this house) when the house is the subject, but एहि घर मे (in this house) when a postposition follows. The same happens with time words: ओहि दिन (that day), एहि बेर (this time).

The change also applies to the joined -क: एहि किताबक नाम (the name of this book). The plural सभ does not block it: एहि सभ बात पर (on all these matters).

Hindi uses इस and उस here. Do not borrow them. The Maithili words are एहि and ओहि.

Examples (5)

  1. एहि घर मे बड्ड जगह अछि।

There is plenty of room in this house.

    एहि replaces ई before मे.

  2. ओहि दिन बरखा भेल।

    It rained that day.

    ओहि replaces ओ before a time word.

  3. एहि बात पर सोचू।

    Think about this matter.

    एहि is used before पर.

  4. ओहि गाम सँ बस अबैत अछि।

A bus comes from that village.

    ओहि goes before सँ.

  5. एहि किताबक नाम की अछि?

What is the name of this book?

    एहि also appears before -क.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi words.

    इस घर मे बड्ड जगह अछि।
    एहि घर मे बड्ड जगह अछि।

इस is Hindi. Maithili uses एहि.
