Formal Linking Words

Level 6Sounds Like ataḥ, ēvaṁ ā tathā

अतः gives a result, and एवं and तथा join items in formal writing.

How It Works

These three words are common in formal Maithili. They are borrowed from Sanskrit and do not change.

WordMeaningEveryday word
अतःthereforeतेँ
एवंandआ
तथाandआ
  • अतः opens a sentence or clause that gives the result.
  • एवं and तथा join nouns or short phrases of the same kind.
  • Use one of them per list; do not repeat them back to back.

You see these words in notices, reports and speeches. They sound serious. In family talk, use आ and तेँ. Mixing the two layers in one sentence can sound odd, so choose the formal set for writing and the everyday set for talk.
