Collective Nouns
Лисје (leaves) and камење (stones) name a whole group at once: Лисјето се веќе жолти. (The leaves are already yellow.)
How It Works
What they are. A collective plural names a mass of things seen together, not one by one. Most are built from a noun + -је:
- лист (leaf) → лисје (the leaves of a tree); the т drops out
- трн (thorn) → трње (thorns, a thorny bush)
- камен (stone) → камење or камења (stones)
The article. Forms in -је take -то: лисјето, трњето, камењето. The variant in -ја takes -та: камењата.
Agreement. The standard grammar uses a plural verb and a plural adjective after them: Лисјето се веќе жолти. Наесен лисјето паѓаат. In daily speech many people use the singular instead (Лисјето паѓа), so you will hear both. In careful writing, use the plural.
No numbers. To count, use the ordinary noun in its count form: два листа, три камена, never два лисје. See count forms. The ordinary plural of лист is листови, used for sheets of paper and pages.
Similar nouns. Браќа (brothers) and деца (children) also take a plural verb: Децата спијат. See irregular plurals. Цвеќе (flowers) was once a collective too, but it now behaves as an ordinary singular noun with its own plural, цвеќиња: Цвеќето е на масата.

After a number, use the count form листа, not лисје.
- Цвеќето е на масата.
The flowers are on the table.

Цвеќе now takes a singular verb.
Common Mistakes
Giving лисје a plural article.
Лисјете се жолти.Лисјето се жолти.Лисје ends in -е like a neuter noun, so its article is -то.
Putting a collective noun after a number.
Во книгата најдов два лисје.Во книгата најдов два листа.Collective nouns name an uncounted mass. To count, use the count form of the ordinary noun: два листа.
