Plural of Neuter Nouns

A neuter noun in -о changes it to -а: село → села. Many neuter nouns in -е end in -иња: куче → кучиња.

How It Works

Nouns in -о: change it to -а.

  • село → села (villages)
  • место → места (places)
  • писмо → писма (letters)
  • езеро → езера (lakes)

Most nouns in -е: add -иња in place of the -е.

  • море → мориња (seas)
  • куче → кучиња (dogs)
  • кафе → кафиња (coffees)
  • момче → момчиња (boys)
  • девојче → девојчиња (little girls)

Nouns in -це, -ште, -ње and -ие: change -е to -а.

  • лице → лица (faces)
  • јајце → јајца (eggs)
  • училиште → училишта (schools)
  • прашање → прашања (questions)

With the article. Neuter plurals end in -а, so they take -та: селата, кучињата, училиштата. See Articles in the Plural.

Irregular nouns. Some very common neuter nouns have their own plurals: дете → деца (children), око → очи (eyes), уво → уши (ears). See Irregular Plurals.

    The villages by the lake are quiet.

    Село → села, and the article is -та: селата.

  2. Кучињата играат во дворот.

    The dogs are playing in the yard.

    Куче → кучиња.

  3. Две кафиња, ве молам.

    Two coffees, please.

  4. Во Македонија нема мориња, но има убави езера.

    There are no seas in Macedonia, but there are beautiful lakes.

    Море → мориња and езеро → езера.

  5. Момчињата играат фудбал.

    The boys are playing football.

  6. Училиштата во градот се нови.

    The schools in the city are new.

    Училиште ends in -ште, so the plural is училишта.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine or feminine -и for a neuter noun.

    Во долината има многу сели.
    Во долината има многу села.

    Neuter nouns in -о take -а in the plural: село → села.

  • Using -а for a short noun in -е that takes -иња.

    Во дворот има две куча.
    Во дворот има две кучиња.

    Most short everyday nouns in -е, such as куче, take -иња.

  • Using -иња for a noun in -це.

    Во фрижидерот има шест јајциња.
    Во фрижидерот има шест јајца.

    Nouns ending in -це, -ште, -ње and -ие change the -е to -а: јајце → јајца.
