Distancing from a Claim

Level 5Sounds Like navodno; izgleda; se čini

Three handy ways to say "this is not my own firsthand knowledge": наводно (allegedly), изгледа дека (it seems that) and се чини дека (it appears that). Изгледа дека заминале. means "It seems they have left."

How It Works

Наводно: I was told. Наводно (allegedly, supposedly) is an adverb that marks a claim as someone else's. It fits naturally with the reported l-form (see reported forms): Наводно, тој заминал во Германија. In a mocking tone it turns into open disbelief, as in doubting a claim.

Изгледа дека: the evidence suggests. Use it when you work something out from what you see. The verb stays in the "it" form изгледа, because the subject is the whole clause after дека (see saying that):

  • Изгледа дека заминале. (It seems they have left.) The l-form adds "I did not see it".
  • Изгледа дека ќе врне. (It looks like it will rain.) Any tense works.

In speech, дека is often dropped: Изгледа, заборавил. (It seems he forgot.) Do not confuse this with the personal verb "to look": Тие изгледаат уморни. (They look tired.)

Се чини: it appears. Се чини дека... sounds a little more careful and formal; with a short pronoun it becomes personal: Ми се чини дека те знам од некаде. (I feel like I know you from somewhere.) It can also be slipped into the middle of a sentence: Времето, се чини, ќе се расипе.

How sure are you? These words sit between a plain statement and a guess. For how likely something is, see degrees of certainty and must for guessing.

Examples (5)

  1. Наводно, тој заминал во Германија.

He has supposedly left for Germany.

Word by Word: Allegedly, he left for Germany.

  2. Изгледа дека заминале.

    It seems they have left.

Word by Word: It-seems that they-left.

The speaker sees the empty house; the l-form adds that they did not see them go.

  3. Изгледа дека ќе врне.

It looks like it is going to rain.

Word by Word: It-seems that will rain.

  4. Ми се чини дека те знам од некаде.

I feel like I know you from somewhere.

Word by Word: To-me self seems that you I-know from somewhere.

  5. Се чини дека никој не го прочитал писмото.

It appears that nobody has read the letter.

Word by Word: Self seems that nobody not it read letter-the.

Common Mistakes

  • Making изгледа plural to match a plural subject in the дека clause.

    Изгледаат дека се уморни.
    Изгледа дека се уморни.

In изгледа дека, the verb always stays in the "it" form. If you want "They look tired", drop дека and use the personal verb: Изгледаат уморни.
