Feminine Job Titles

Most nouns for people get a feminine form with -ка: учител → учителка (teacher), студент → студентка (student), пејач → пејачка (singer). A smaller group uses -ица: цар → царица (king → queen).

How It Works

-ка. This is the main pattern: учител → учителка, пријател → пријателка, студент → студентка, професор → професорка, пејач → пејачка, продавач → продавачка, готвач → готвачка. Nouns in -ач and -тел, taught in people from verbs, always take -ка.

-ник → -ничка. Before -ка, the к of -ник becomes ч: ученик → ученичка, работник → работничка. A few -ник nouns take -ница instead: затвореник → затвореница (prisoner).

-ица. A smaller group, including some animals: цар → царица, крал → кралица, вдовец → вдовица (widower → widow), лав → лавица (lion → lioness).

Nationalities follow the same idea: Македонец → Македонка (see nationalities). All these forms are feminine nouns in -а: plural учителки, ученички, царици, article учителката. When calling a woman, they take the vocative ending -е: Учителке!

Some official titles are still often used in the masculine for women, but for everyday jobs the feminine form is the normal choice: Таа е учителка.

    Студент + -ка. По медицина names the subject she studies.

  3. Мојата омилена пејачка е од Струмица.

    My favorite singer is from Strumica.

    Пејач + -ка gives пејачка.

  4. Сестра ми работи како продавачка.

    My sister works as a shop assistant.

  5. Во класот има десет ученички и осум ученици.

    There are ten girls and eight boys in the class.

    Ученик becomes ученичка; the plurals are ученички and ученици.

  6. Царот и царицата имаа три ќерки.

    The king and queen had three daughters.

    Цар takes -ица: царица.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -ка to -ник without changing к to ч.

    Таа е ученикка.
    Таа е ученичка.

    Before -ка, the к of -ник becomes ч: ученичка, работничка.

  • Choosing -ица for a noun that takes -ка.

    Нашата учителица е од Охрид.
    Нашата учителка е од Охрид.

    Nouns in -тел and -ач take -ка. Only a small group such as цар and крал takes -ица.
