Saying Where You Are from

Од каде си? means Where are you from? Answer: Јас сум од Скопје. (I am from Skopje.)

How It Works

1. Asking

  • Од каде си? – to a friend
  • Од каде сте? – politely, or to a group
  • Од каде е Ана? – about someone else

2. Answering

  • Јас сум од Скопје. – I am from Skopje.
  • Од Скопје сум. – the same answer without јас.
  • Од Скопје. – a short answer is fine too.

3. The place name does not change
Macedonian nouns have no case endings, so after од you use the name exactly as it is: Англија → од Англија, Германија → од Германија, Битола → од Битола.

4. From versus in
Од tells where you come from. Во tells where you are or live now: Живеам во Скопје, а сум од Охрид.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Serbian question word одакле.

    Одакле си?
    Од каде си?

    Одакле is Serbian. The Macedonian question is Од каде си?, and you will also hear Откаде си?

  • Changing the ending of the place name.

    Јас сум од Англије.
    Јас сум од Англија.

    Macedonian nouns do not take case endings after prepositions. The name stays Англија.

  • Using во when you mean where you come from.

    Јас сум во Скопје.
    Јас сум од Скопје.

    Јас сум во Скопје means I am in Skopje right now. To say where you come from, use од.
