Do Not, Another Way: ne timeas
Do Not: Ne Timeas
Ne timeas: do not be afraid.
How It Works
| Way | Latin | English |
|---|---|---|
| ne and the present subjunctive | Ne timeas. | Do not be afraid. |
| ne and the perfect subjunctive | Ne timueris. | Do not be afraid. |
| noli and the infinitive | Noli timere. | Do not be afraid. |
| to several people | Ne timeatis. | Do not be afraid, all of you. |
Prose uses the subjunctive or noli. Ne with a plain command, as in ne time, is mostly a poet's form.
The same ne works with the first person (Ne dormiamus, let us not sleep) and the third person. The first conjugation has -es (ne ames), and the other conjugations add -as to their stem (ne habeas, ne ducas, ne audias).
