non (Not)
Not
Non turns a statement into its opposite.
How It Works
| Latin | English |
|---|---|
| Marcus est in villa. | Marcus is in the house. |
| Marcus non est in villa. | Marcus is not in the house. |
| Puella cantat. | The girl sings. |
| Puella non cantat. | The girl does not sing. |
Non also works as a one-word answer: Non means No. It sounds like NOHN in both journeys.
You can also use non to deny a single word, as in non Marcus, sed Iulia (not Marcus, but Iulia). See sed.
Non is for statements and questions of fact. A different word, ne, is used for commands and wishes, and it comes at Level 5.
