どう/いかが

How

Level 1Sounds Like dou/ikaga

Use どう for casual or standard situations and いかが for formal or business settings to ask 'How is...?' or 'How about...?'

How It Works

1. Asking for Opinions or Impressions
The most common use is asking someone's thoughts. The structure is usually [Noun] + は + どう/いかが + ですか.
Example: 日本の生活はどうですか。(にほんのせいかつはどうですか。)(How is life in Japan?)

2. Making Suggestions or Offers
You can use these to suggest an action or offer something. In this context, いかが is very common in service industries.
Example: お茶はいかがですか。(おちゃはいかがですか。)(How about some tea? / Would you like some tea?)

3. Register Differences

  • どう: The base word. Used alone, it is casual. When used as どうですか, it is standard polite Japanese (teineigo) appropriate for colleagues and strangers.
  • いかが: Used in formal business, with superiors, or in hospitality. It is more professional and respectful.
  • いかがでしょうか: An even more polite variant of いかがですか, frequently used in formal requests.

4. Limitations
Unlike the English 'how,' these words are generally used for evaluations or states. To ask about the method (how to do something), you should use どうやって in standard situations or どのように in formal contexts.

Examples (5)

  1. 仕事はどうですか。

    How is work?

Word by Word: Work (topic) how is it?

A standard, polite way to ask a friend or colleague about their current work situation.

  2. お味はいかがですか。

    How is the taste?

Word by Word: Taste (polite topic) how is it?

A very formal way to ask for an opinion on food, often used by chefs or hosts.

  3. 新しい車はどうでしたか。

    How was the new car?

Word by Word: New car (topic) how was it?

Using the past tense of です to ask for an impression of a past experience.

  4. コーヒーはいかがですか。

    Would you like some coffee?

Word by Word: Coffee (topic) how is it?

A polite offer. Using いかが makes the offer sound more elegant and less direct than どう.

  5. 週末はどうするの?

What are you going to do this weekend?

Word by Word: Weekend (topic) how do?

In casual speech, どう is often used with verbs to ask about plans or decisions.

Common Mistakes

  • Using いかが to ask for directions or methods.

    駅までいかが行きますか。
    駅までどうやって行きますか。

いかが and どう ask for an opinion, state, or suggestion. To ask for a method or 'how-to,' you must use どうやって or the more formal どのように instead.

  • Using いかが with the standard verb する.

    明日は、いかがしますか。
    明日は、いかがなさいますか。

While どう can be used with します, the formal いかが must be paired with the honorific verb なさいます (from なさる) when asking what someone will do.

  • Thinking どう is only for casual speech.

    (目上の人に)最近、どう?
    (目上の人に)最近、いかがですか。

どう itself is casual, but どうですか is standard polite Japanese suitable for most daily situations. いかが is reserved for higher levels of honorific speech, such as business or formal hospitality.
