Nominalization (Verb → Noun for Formal Style)

Level 5

Nominalization (nominalizzazione) is the transformation of a verb into a noun (e.g., partire → la partenza). It is a hallmark of formal, academic, and bureaucratic Italian, shifting the focus from the action to the concept.

How It Works

Nominalization occurs through several mechanisms:

  • Morphological Derivation: Adding suffixes to verb stems. Common suffixes include:
    • -zione / -sione: Used for many Latin-derived verbs (comunicare → comunicazione).
    • -mento: Common for action nouns (cambiare → cambiamento).
    • -tura: Often relates to technical processes (mappare → mappatura).
    • -aggio: Used for processes or activities (lavare → lavaggio, montare → montaggio).
    • -anza / -enza: Often derived from the present participle (mancare → mancanza, partire → partenza).
    • Zero-suffix: The verb becomes a noun without a suffix (arrivare → l'arrivo, scartare → lo scarto).
  • Syntactic Nominalization: Using the infinito sostantivato (the infinitive with an article, like il bere) or the phrase il fatto che to turn a whole clause into a noun.

Syntactic Changes: When a verb becomes a noun, its arguments change:

  • The Object: Usually introduced by the preposition di. Cancellare il volo becomes La cancellazione del volo.
  • The Subject (Agent): While di can be used, the locution da parte di is preferred to avoid ambiguity with the object. For example, La cattura del ladro da parte della polizia (The police's capture of the thief).
  • Possessives: Possessive adjectives can replace either the subject or the object. Lui è partito becomes La sua partenza.

Register Note: This pattern is extremely frequent in written formal Italian but rare in casual speech. Overusing it in conversation can sound 'robotic' or pompous, a style famously criticized by Italo Calvino as antilingua.

Examples (5)

  1. Si prega di dare comunicazione dell'avvenuto pagamento.

Please provide notification of the completed payment.

Word by Word: One prays to give communication of the happened payment.

A classic bureaucratic sentence using 'comunicazione' (from comunicare) and 'pagamento' (from pagare) to sound formal.

  2. La rimozione delle particelle avviene tramite filtrazione.

The removal of particles occurs through filtration.

Word by Word: The removal of the particles happens through filtration.

Scientific register using 'rimozione' (from rimuovere) and 'filtrazione' (from filtrare) to describe a process as a fact.

  3. L'inosservanza delle regole comporta l'esclusione dal concorso.

Failure to observe the rules results in exclusion from the competition.

Word by Word: The non-observance of the rules carries the exclusion from the competition.

Legal/formal style using 'inosservanza' and 'esclusione' to create an impersonal, authoritative tone.

  4. Il continuo lamentarsi non risolverà il problema.

The constant complaining will not solve the problem.

Word by Word: The continuous to complain not will solve the problem.

An example of 'infinito sostantivato', where the infinitive verb functions as a noun.

  5. La valutazione dei rischi è fondamentale.

The assessment of risks is fundamental.

Word by Word: The evaluation of the risks is fundamental.

Uses 'valutazione' (from valutare) to turn an action into a conceptual subject.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting to use prepositions for the noun's arguments.

La cancellazione il volo è stata improvvisa.
La cancellazione del volo è stata improvvisa.

In Italian, unlike verbs, nouns cannot take direct objects. You must use a preposition (usually 'di') to link the noun to its object.

  • Using the gerund as a noun (English influence).

    Fumando è vietato qui.
Fumare è vietato qui. / Il fumo è vietato qui.

English uses the '-ing' form (gerund) as a noun. Italian uses either the infinitive or a derived noun, never the gerund.

  • Overgeneralizing suffixes like -zione.

    L'andazione a scuola è importante.
    L'andamento scolastico è importante. / L'andata a scuola...

Not every verb uses -zione. Suffixes are lexicalized and must be learned individually for each verb.
