Bureaucratic Register (Overview)
The registro burocratico (or burocratese) is the 'official' language of Italian administration. It prioritizes authority and legal precision over clarity, often using passive structures and technical vocabulary.
How It Works
The bureaucratic register is a specialized variety of Italian used by public administrations, legal entities, and corporate offices. While often criticized as an 'antilingua' (anti-language) for being unnecessarily obscure, it remains the default for official correspondence.
Key characteristics include:
- Nominalization: A preference for nouns over verbs. Instead of saying 'to deliver' (consegnare), a bureaucrat might write 'to proceed to the delivery' (procedere alla consegna).
- Impersonal Focus: Frequent use of the si passivante or passive with venire to sound neutral and objective.
- Archaic Formulas: Use of enclitic pronouns in fixed expressions like trattasi (it is a matter of) or vedasi (see/refer to).
- Complex Connectors: Replacing simple prepositions with phrases like ai fini di (for the purpose of) or in ordine a (regarding).
- The 'Ovvero' Trap: In this register, ovvero almost always means 'or' (o/oppure), whereas elsewhere it can also mean 'namely' (ossia).
Examples (4)
- Si comunica che la S.V. è tenuta a regolarizzare la propria posizione contributiva.
It is communicated that You [formal] are required to regularize your contributory position.
Word by Word: One communicates that the S.V. is held to regularize the own position contributory.
Uses the impersonal 'si' and the abbreviation S.V. (Signoria Vostra), a highly formal way to say 'you'.
- Onde evitare ritardi nell'istruttoria, si prega di allegare la documentazione in calce.
In order to avoid delays in the preliminary investigation, please attach the documentation at the bottom.
Word by Word: In order to avoid delays in the investigation, one prays to attach the documentation in foot.
Uses 'onde' (in order to) and 'in calce' (at the bottom), typical bureaucratic vocabulary.
- Trattasi di provvedimento non suscettibile di ulteriore proroga.
This is a measure not susceptible to further extension.
Word by Word: It treats itself of measure not susceptible of further extension.
Uses the archaic enclitic form 'trattasi' instead of the standard 'si tratta di'.
- Si prega di voler procedere al contatto telefonico entro le ore 12:00.
Please proceed to telephone contact by 12:00 PM.
Word by Word: One prays of to want to proceed to the contact telephone within the hours 12:00.
Demonstrates heavy nominalization ('contatto telefonico' instead of 'chiamare') and the formula 'si prega di voler'.
Common Mistakes
Using bureaucratic formulas in standard business emails or casual settings.
Gentile professore, con la presente Le comunico che sono malato.Gentile professore, Le scrivo per dirLe che non sto bene.'Con la presente' (with the present letter) is too stiff for a simple note to a teacher; standard formal Italian is better.
Using 'ovvero' where 'oppure' is clearer.
Different MeaningScegliere l'opzione A ovvero l'opzione B.Scegliere l'opzione A oppure l'opzione B.'Ovvero' is correct and can mean 'or', but it can also mean 'in other words'. In forms, 'oppure' makes it clear that the reader chooses one option.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the basic bureaucratic register, a learner must first understand how to depersonalize language using the passive voice and the impersonal 'si'. Additionally, familiarity with nominalization is essential, as official Italian prefers long noun-based phrases over direct verbal actions.
