Nominal Style vs Verbal Style

Level 5

Stile Verbale uses verbs to show action and time (Le scuole chiudono). Stile Nominale uses nouns to show a state or result (Chiusura delle scuole).

How It Works

In Italian, the choice between verbal and nominal style is a matter of register and perspective.

  • Stile Verbale: This is the standard way of communicating. It relies on finite verbs to anchor a sentence in time (past, present, future) and mood (certainty, doubt). It is dynamic and narrative.
  • Stile Nominale: Here, the verb is either omitted or transformed into a noun (a process called nominalizzazione). This creates a sense of 'atemporality'—the action is frozen into a fact or a title.

Key Characteristics:
1. Conciseness: It allows for extremely dense information, which is why it dominates journalistic headlines.
2. Formality: In bureaucratic contexts, it sounds more objective and authoritative. Instead of saying 'When you arrive,' one says 'Upon arrival' (All'arrivo).
3. Syntactic Independence: Nominal sentences are not 'broken' sentences; they are autonomous units often marked by specific intonation in speech or strong punctuation in writing.

Examples (5)

  1. Chiusura delle scuole per allerta meteo.

Schools closing due to weather alert.

Word by Word: Closing of the schools for alert weather.

A classic nominal headline. The verb 'chiudere' (to close) becomes the noun 'chiusura' (closing), removing the need for a tense.

  2. Mi scuso per il ritardo della risposta.

I apologize for the delay in replying.

Word by Word: Myself I apologize for the delay of the response.

Formal style. Using 'ritardo' (delay) and 'risposta' (response) instead of 'aver risposto tardi' (having replied late).

  3. Nessun quadro alle pareti, solo silenzio.

No paintings on the walls, only silence.

Word by Word: No painting at the walls, only silence.

Literary nominal style. It evokes an image and a mood without using the verb 'esserci' (to be there).

  4. L'invio della domanda deve avvenire entro domani.

The sending of the application must happen by tomorrow.

Word by Word: The sending of the question must happen within tomorrow.

Bureaucratic style. 'L'invio' (the sending) is a nominalization of 'inviare' (to send).

  5. Tutto bene?

    Everything okay?

    Word by Word: All well?

A common spoken nominal sentence where the verb 'va' or 'è' is omitted for speed.

Common Mistakes

  • Using heavy nominal style in casual conversation.

La mia intenzione è la partenza immediata.
    Voglio partire subito.

While grammatically correct, using complex nominalizations in daily speech sounds robotic or overly bureaucratic. Stick to verbal style for natural flow.

  • Mixing the two styles: dropping the article but keeping the verb.

    Esame è difficile.
    Esame difficile.

A full sentence with 'essere', like 'L'esame è difficile', is correct verbal style. Nominal style removes the verb entirely to focus on the noun phrase. Keeping 'è' while dropping the article gives a sentence that is neither style.
