Academic Register: Complex Nominalizations
Complex nominalization is a hallmark of high-level Italian (academic, legal, and scientific). It replaces verbs with nouns (e.g., 'to evaluate' becomes 'the evaluation') and stacks them using 'di' phrases to pack more information into a single sentence.
How It Works
In advanced Italian prose, particularly in the italiano accademico and burocratico, sentences often prioritize nouns over verbs. This process, known as nominalizzazione, involves several key components:
- Morphological Derivation: Verbs and adjectives are transformed using specific suffixes. Common ones include -zione (valutare → valutazione), -mento (svolgere → svolgimento), -ità (complesso → complessità), -ura (mappare → mappatura), and -anza/-enza (rilevare → rilevanza).
- Infinito Sostantivato: The nominalized infinitive is also used to treat an action as a concept, such as 'Il costante monitorare i dati...'
- Syntactic Stacking (Incatenamento): Known as incatenamento di complementi di specificazione, the arguments of a verb are converted into prepositional modifiers, usually starting with di: 'L'analisi della variazione della pressione...'
- Support Verbs (Verbi di supporto): Nominalization often requires 'empty' verbs like effettuare, compiere, or apportare to carry the tense (e.g., 'effettuare un'analisi' instead of 'analizzare').
- Thematic Progression (Anafora nominale): This allows a writer to take a complex idea and summarize it into a single noun phrase (incapsulamento) that becomes the subject of the next sentence, ensuring tight cohesion.
- Impersonality: Because the verb is removed, the 'agent' is often omitted or relegated to a da parte di phrase, making the text sound more scientific and less subjective.
While this style is essential for academic precision, overusing it can lead to burocratese, which can be intentionally obscure.
Examples (4)
- La valutazione dell'efficacia dell'implementazione delle nuove politiche richiede un'analisi dei dati.
The evaluation of the effectiveness of the implementation of the new policies requires a data analysis.
Word by Word: The evaluation of the effectiveness of the implementation of the new policies requires an analysis of the data.
This sentence uses four nested 'di' phrases to link concepts (evaluation, effectiveness, implementation, policies) into one dense subject.
- Si comunica la sospensione dell'erogazione del servizio per necessità di manutenzione della rete.
We inform you of the suspension of the provision of the service due to the need for maintenance of the network.
Word by Word: One communicates the suspension of the provision of the service for necessity of maintenance of the network.
A classic bureaucratic example where 'suspending' and 'providing' are turned into nouns to sound more official and impersonal.
- L'osservazione della variazione della pressione ha confermato l'ipotesi iniziale.
The observation of the variation of the pressure confirmed the initial hypothesis.
Word by Word: The observation of the variation of the pressure has confirmed the hypothesis initial.
In scientific Italian, nominalization treats the 'variation' as a static object of study rather than an ongoing action.
- La mancata comunicazione da parte dell'interessato comporta l'annullamento della richiesta.
The failure to communicate by the interested party entails the cancellation of the request.
Word by Word: The missed communication from part of the interested [one] entails the cancellation of the request.
Here, 'mancata comunicazione' (failed communication) acts as a complex noun phrase, and the agent is introduced by 'da parte di'.
Common Mistakes
Using the wrong deverbal suffix (e.g., -mento instead of -zione).
Il decidimento del comitato è finale.La decisione del comitato è finale.Learners often guess suffixes. While both -mento and -zione are common, they are not interchangeable. You must learn the specific noun form for each verb.
Creating 'bottomless' chains of prepositions that obscure the meaning.
La verifica della validità della richiesta della proroga della scadenza del bando...La verifica della validità della richiesta per prorogare la scadenza del bando...While nominalization is formal, stacking more than 3-4 'di' phrases makes the sentence unreadable. It is better to break the chain with an infinitive or a different preposition.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn complex academic nominalizations, you must be proficient in using articulated prepositions to chain nouns together and understand the morphological process of turning verbs and adjectives into nouns (nominalization). You also need to understand the stylistic shift from a verbal register to a formal nominal register.
- Nominalization (Verb → Noun for Formal Style)
Understanding how to turn a verb into a noun is the fundamental building block for creating academic nominalizations.
