Indonesian technical register

Level 5

Technical writing commonly uses specialized terms and explicit definitions. Some technical words, such as sistem, remain unchanged in conversation. Passive voice or nominalization can organize information but does not automatically make it objective.

How It Works

In Indonesian, the technical register (ragam ilmiah) is a highly formal level of Standard Indonesian used in science, law, and academia. While the register itself is highly formal, some widely used technical terms (istilah teknis) also occur unchanged in casual speech (e.g., sistem, virus, aplikasi). Highly specialized terms may remain limited to professional or academic contexts, so register cannot be inferred from vocabulary alone. This register follows these core features:

  • Standardized Spelling (Kata Baku): There is a strict requirement to use standardized spelling according to the official dictionary (KBBI). For example, using analisis instead of analisa, or sistem instead of sistim.
  • Formal Syntax and Affixation: While technical vocabulary often consists of nouns, use the verb form required by the construction. Many formal active transitive verbs use the meN- prefix (e.g., mengimplementasikan). In a consistently formal report, writers generally avoid colloquial vocabulary (e.g., using membuat instead of bikin, or seperti instead of kayak) and ordinarily avoid conversational particles like sih, dong, deh, or kok.
  • Denotative Meaning: Define terms clearly in the intended domain. Established technical metaphors and figurative terminology also exist; precision does not require every word to have only a literal meaning.
  • Effective Sentences (Kalimat Efektif): Sentences are structured to prioritize logic, clarity, and conciseness, strictly avoiding redundancy.
  • Relational Verbs for Definition: Technical writing relies on adalah or merupakan to define concepts and establish relationships between entities, ensuring clarity in definitions.
  • Objective Tone and Pronoun Choice: Claims should be supported by data, measurements, or cited facts rather than personal opinion. Avoid subjective adjectives such as bagus or jelek when a measurable description is available. First-person pronouns like saya or aku are often avoided; writers may instead use the di- passive, the agentless passive, or role nouns such as penulis and peneliti.
  • Complex Logical Conjunctions: Precise logical flow is maintained through formal connectors such as oleh karena itu (therefore) or sehubungan dengan (in connection with).
  • Nominalization: Complex ideas are often packaged into nouns using peN-...-an or ke-...-an, allowing for a dense, information-rich style.
  • Quantitative and Precise (Kuantitatif): Use exact measurements when the task and evidence support them. Qualifiers such as banyak, lumayan, or sering can be appropriate when they accurately reflect the available evidence; do not invent numerical precision.
  • Consistency (Taat Asas): Specific technical terms, abbreviations, and formatting must be used identically throughout the text. Unlike creative writing, stylistic variation (such as using synonyms to avoid repetition) is discouraged to prevent confusion.

Examples (5)

  1. Pemerintah sedang melakukan percepatan pembangunan infrastruktur nasional.

The government is currently accelerating national infrastructure development.

Word by Word: Government [progressive] do acceleration development infrastructure national.

Note the 'unraveling' of the noun phrase: 'acceleration' (head) -> 'development' -> 'infrastructure' -> 'national'.

  2. Kebijakan suku bunga tersebut diimplementasikan untuk menekan laju inflasi.

The interest rate policy was implemented to suppress the rate of inflation.

Word by Word: Policy interest-rate that be-implemented to suppress rate of inflation.

Uses the formal passive 'diimplementasikan' and the technical term 'laju' (rate/pace).

  3. Analisis data menunjukkan adanya korelasi signifikan antara variabel tersebut.

Data analysis shows a significant correlation between those variables.

Word by Word: Analysis data [active]-show existence correlation significant between variable that.

Technical terms like 'analisis', 'korelasi', and 'variabel' follow standard Indonesian affixation and word order rules.

  4. Prosedur operasional standar harus dipatuhi oleh seluruh karyawan.

Standard operating procedures must be obeyed by all employees.

Word by Word: Procedure operational standard must [passive]-obey-ed by all employee.

Prosedur is the head noun, operasional specifies its domain, and standar describes the procedure as standard. This particular phrase has a different order from English standard operating procedure; it is not a rule to reverse every technical phrase mechanically.

  5. Sistem tersebut mengalami galat. Sistemnya lagi error deh.

The system experienced an error. The system is having an error right now.

The first sentence uses formal explanatory wording; the second uses conversational lagi, error, and deh. Sistem remains recognizable in both. -Nya and loanwords are not inherently forbidden in formal Indonesian; the whole construction and choice of term determine the tone.

Common Mistakes

  • Using English 'Modifier-Head' word order for technical phrases.

    nasional ekonomi krisis
    krisis ekonomi nasional

In this intended noun phrase, krisis is the head and ekonomi nasional specifies the domain. Use krisis ekonomi nasional, not a mechanical English-order sequence. Other Indonesian noun phrases need their own structural analysis.

  • Over-using 'yang' to link every noun in a technical chain.

    rencana yang pengembangan yang infrastruktur
    rencana pengembangan infrastruktur

While 'yang' is a relative pronoun, technical chains in Indonesian are usually formed by simple juxtaposition (placing nouns side-by-side).

Learn This First

To use Indonesian technical register, learners must understand how the language incorporates learned and borrowed nouns into its native syntactic framework. This requires a strong grasp of basic word order, the specific rules for applying prefixes to loanwords, and the ability to parse complex nominalization chains that are characteristic of formal and scientific prose.
