men-
The Men- Form of MeN-
The men- prefix is a specific form of the meN- prefix used to create active verbs. It is triggered by specific starting letters of the root word, most notably c, d, j, z, sy, and t.
How It Works
The men- allomorph follows specific phonological rules:
1. Retention (c, d, j, z, sy): In the ordinary multisyllabic patterns illustrated here, add men- to the front.
- cari → mencari (to search)
- dengar → mendengar (to hear)
- jual → menjual (to sell)
2. Replacement (t): When a root starts with t followed by a vowel, the t is dropped and replaced by the nasal n.
- tulis → menulis (to write)
- tolak → menolak (to reject)
3. Exceptions for 't': The t is not dropped if the root starts with a consonant cluster (like tr-) and in certain established loanword forms. Do not decide every loanword’s form merely by how foreign it feels.
- traktir → mentraktir (to treat/pay for)
- transfer → mentransfer (to transfer)
Check the Whole Base: The one-syllable pattern takes priority in words such as cat → mengecat. Before c, j, and sy, men- is the written form; the nasal is pronounced palatally in the TBBI description. This is why spelling and sound labels must be distinguished.
Examples (5)
- Saya sedang mencari kunci mobil.
I am looking for the car keys.
Word by Word: I [progressive marker] search key car.
The root 'cari' starts with 'c', so the prefix 'men-' is added without changing the root.
- Ibu menulis surat untuk nenek.
Mother is writing a letter for grandmother.
Word by Word: Mother write letter for grandmother.
The root 'tulis' starts with 't'. The 't' is dropped and replaced by the 'n' in 'men-', resulting in 'menulis'.
- Dia mendengar musik di kamar.
He/She is listening to music in the room.
Word by Word: He/She hear music at room.
The root 'dengar' starts with 'd', so 'men-' is simply attached to the front.
- Ayah menjual mobil lama itu.
Father is selling that old car.
Word by Word: Father sell car old that.
The root 'jual' starts with 'j', which triggers the 'men-' allomorph.
- Kakak mentraktir kami makan siang.
Older sibling is treating us to lunch.
Word by Word: Older-sibling treat us eat afternoon.
Because 'traktir' starts with a consonant cluster (tr), the 't' is not dropped.
Common Mistakes
Failing to drop the 't' in standard roots.
Saya sedang mentulis surat.Saya sedang menulis surat. The established form of tulis is menulis, with initial t replaced in this nasal-prefix pattern. Do not extend that deletion to every t-initial loanword or consonant cluster.
Using 'men-' for roots starting with 's'.
Dia mensapu lantai.Dia menyapu lantai.Sapu follows the ordinary s-plus-vowel pattern and becomes menyapu with the meny- allomorph. Initial s clusters have separate forms, so this is not a rule for every written s.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand the 'men-' allomorph, you first need to understand the general function of the 'meN-' prefix in forming active transitive verbs. It is also helpful to have seen other allomorphs like 'mem-' to understand the pattern of how the prefix adapts to the initial letter of the root word.
