Nasal alternation in agent nouns
The peN- prefix is the nominal (noun) counterpart to the active verbal prefix meN-. It creates nouns that describe the person who performs an action (agent) or the object used to perform it (instrument).
How It Works
The peN- prefix is highly productive for creating professional titles, roles, and names of tools.
1. Morphological Rules (Nasal Alternation):
The 'N' changes depending on the root word's first letter:
- pe-: Before l, m, n, r, w, and y (e.g., lukis → pelukis 'painter'). Do not confuse this nasal-family pe- with the separate nonnasal pe- in pejalan and pejuang, related to berjalan and berjuang.
- pem-: Before b, f, v, and replaces p (e.g., baca → pembaca 'reader'; pilih → pemilih 'voter').
- pen-: Before c, d, j, z, and replaces t (e.g., curi → pencuri 'thief'; tulis → penulis 'writer'; zalim → penzalim 'oppressor'). Learn peziarah as an established word; not every written pe- belongs to the nasal family.
- peng-: Before vowels (a, e, i, o, u), g, h, and replaces k (e.g., ajar → pengajar 'educator'; kirim → pengirim 'sender').
- peny-: Replaces s (e.g., sapu → penyapu 'sweeper').
- penge-: A common form with one-syllable bases (e.g., bom → pengebom, bomber). TBBI also records pembom; short-base noun formation has lexical variation.
2. Important Exceptions:
- A Separate Nonnasal Family: TBBI places pejalan, pejuang and petenis in the per-/pe- family or its analogical extensions. These are not proof that nasal peN- simply drops its nasal before arbitrary loanwords. Learn the noun together with its derivational family.
- Function: It primarily marks the Agent (the doer, e.g., penulis) or the Instrument (the tool, e.g., penghapus 'eraser').
Player Versus Game: Saya suka pemain ini means I like this player and is grammatical. To mean this game, choose permainan. Pemain belongs to the nonnasal family associated with bermain; not every agent noun is formed by nasal peN-.

Common Mistakes
Retaining t in the established nasal-family noun penulis.
pentulispenulisThe established nasal-family noun is penulis, parallel to menulis. Petenis belongs to a different nonnasal pe- pattern; it is not an exception created merely because tenis is borrowed.
Applying the nasal 'n' to all words starting with 'j'.
penjalan kakipejalan kakiPejalan kaki belongs with berjalan in the nonnasal per-/pe- family. Contrast nasal pen- in pencuri or penjual; the difference is morphological, not just an irregular pronunciation of j.
How It Connects
Learn This First
The peN- nasal alternation follows the same morphophonological rules as the meN- prefix system. To understand how 'tulis' becomes 'penulis' or 'baca' becomes 'pembaca', a learner needs to be familiar with the basic agentive function of peN- and the standard Indonesian rules for nasal assimilation and consonant replacement found in the meN- verb system.

The learner must first understand the basic function of the peN- prefix in creating agent nouns before learning the specific phonological rules for its nasal alternation.
Level 2 - Root-initial p replacement
Understanding how initial consonants like 'p', 't', 'k', and 's' are replaced or assimilated in the meN- system is essential because the exact same rules apply to the peN- prefix.
