People and Tools with PeN-

Level 2

The peN- prefix creates nouns. It usually means 'the person who does' (like penulis - writer) or 'the tool used for' (like penghapus - eraser).

How It Works

The peN- prefix is the most common way to derive nouns from verbs in Indonesian. It primarily serves two functions: identifying the agent (the person performing the action) and identifying the instrument (the tool used for the action).

1. Morphological Rules (Nasalization)
The 'N' is a placeholder for specific nasal sounds. These are the principal patterns; learn established loanword forms and exceptions as complete words:

  • p, t, k, s (Dropped if followed by a vowel): These letters disappear and are replaced by a nasal sound.
    - p becomes pem- (e.g., pukul → pemukul)
    - t becomes pen- (e.g., tulis → penulis)
    - k becomes peng- (e.g., kirim → pengirim)
    - s becomes peny- (e.g., sapu → penyapu)
  • Cluster Exception: If t, k, or s is followed by another consonant (a cluster), the letter is retained (e.g., kritik → pengkritik, stabil → penstabil). However, p is an exception and still drops even in clusters (e.g., proses → pemroses).
  • c, d, j: Becomes pen-. Note that c is always retained (e.g., cuci → pencuci).
  • b, f, v: Becomes pem- (e.g., baca → pembaca).
  • g, h, vowels: Becomes peng- (e.g., ambil → pengambil).
  • l, m, n, r, w, y: Becomes pe- (e.g., lukis → pelukis).
  • Monosyllabic roots: Becomes penge- (e.g., cat → pengecat).

2. Agent vs. Instrument
The peN- prefix is the standard way to form agent nouns (people who do things). While it also forms names for tools (e.g., pemotong can mean 'a cutter' or 'a cutting tool'), context usually makes the meaning clear. The word tukang is a separate term often used specifically for tradespeople or those performing manual labor (e.g., tukang kayu for a carpenter).

3. Adjective Roots (Habitual Nuance)
When attached to adjectives, it describes a person who habitually possesses that quality. For example, pemarah (from marah - angry) refers to a hot-tempered person, not just someone who is currently angry, and pemalu refers to a naturally shy person.

Examples (5)

  1. Penulis itu sedang mencari ide untuk buku barunya.

That writer is looking for ideas for their new book.

Word by Word: Writer that currently look-for idea for book new-their.

'Penulis' comes from 'tulis' (to write). The 't' is dropped and replaced by 'n' following the peN- rules.

  2. Jangan lupa membawa penghapus ke kelas seni.

Don't forget to bring an eraser to art class.

Word by Word: Do-not forget bring eraser to class art.

'Penghapus' comes from 'hapus' (to erase/wipe). Here, the prefix creates an instrument (eraser) rather than a person.

  3. Penyanyi itu memiliki suara yang sangat merdu.

That singer has a very melodious voice.

Word by Word: Singer that have voice which very melodious.

'Penyanyi' comes from 'nyanyi' (to sing). Since 'ny' is a nasal sound, the prefix simply becomes 'pe-'.

  4. Dia adalah seorang pemalu.

    He/she is a shy person.

    Word by Word: He/she is a-person shy-one.

'Pemalu' comes from the adjective 'malu' (shy), creating a noun for someone with that trait.

  5. Pengecat itu sedang mengecat pagar rumah.

That painter is painting the house fence.

Word by Word: Painter that currently paint fence house.

'Pengecat' uses the 'penge-' allomorph because the root 'cat' (paint) is only one syllable.

Common Mistakes

  • Failing to drop the initial letters p, t, k, or s.

    pentulis
    penulis

For ordinary vowel-followed p, t, k, and s roots, replace the initial consonant with the corresponding nasal sound. Check the cluster rules and established exceptions rather than applying this to every borrowed root.

  • Confusing peN- with the simple pe- prefix.

    penjalan
    pejalan

Words derived from 'ber-' verbs (like 'berjalan') usually take the simple 'pe-' prefix without nasalization. 'Pejalan kaki' means pedestrian.

The peN- prefix system for creating agent nouns and instruments is morphologically identical to the meN- active verb prefix system. A learner must first understand the nasalization rules (nasal alternations) of meN- and its various allomorphs to correctly predict how peN- attaches to different root words.
