Beneficial Cause with Berkat

Level 4

Berkat is a formal to neutral preposition used to express a positive cause. It translates to "thanks to" or "by virtue of."

How It Works

Berkat presents a cause as helpful or fortunate. Unlike neutral karena, it positively frames the contribution to the outcome, without necessarily expressing personal gratitude.

1. Basic Structure: Berkat + noun phrase is the model in the examples: berkat teknologi baru and berkat doa kalian. Berkat adanya dukungan Anda explicitly names the presence of support. A phrase with fakta bahwa can package a proposition as a fact, but do not add it mechanically to every causal sentence.

2. People and Pronouns: Berkat kamu and berkat beliau are valid. An official primary-school textbook says Berkat beliau, kita bisa bersekolah seperti sekarang about Ki Hajar Dewantara. Berkat bantuanmu specifies your help; it does not correct an ungrammatical personal pronoun.

3. Positive Framing and Irony: Berkat banjir, rumah saya rusak sounds ironic because a damaging flood is presented as helpful. For an ordinary complaint, gara-gara banjir or akibat banjir makes the intended negative framing clearer. The ironic version is not a word-order error.

4. Other Meaning and Register: Berkat is also a noun meaning blessing. Nasi berkat refers to ceremonial food taken home after certain traditional gatherings or prayers. The causal marker occurs in formal writing and ordinary conversation.

Examples (4)

  1. Berkat kerja kerasnya, dia lulus ujian.

Thanks to his/her hard work, he/she passed the exam.

Word by Word: Thanks-to work hard-his/her, he/she pass exam.

Here, 'berkat' attributes the success (passing the exam) to the positive cause (hard work).

  2. Kami sampai tepat waktu berkat bantuan navigasi GPS.

We arrived on time thanks to the help of GPS navigation.

Word by Word: We arrive exact time thanks to help navigation GPS.

This shows 'berkat' used in the middle of a sentence to explain a successful arrival.

  3. Berkat teknologi baru, penyakit itu dapat disembuhkan.

Owing to new technology, that disease can be cured.

Word by Word: Thanks to technology new, disease that can be cured.

In formal contexts, 'berkat' is used to highlight the role of advancements or discoveries.

  4. Semua ini terjadi berkat doa kalian.

All of this happened thanks to your prayers.

Word by Word: All this happen thanks to prayer you (plural).

This demonstrates the word's nuance of 'blessing' or spiritual acknowledgment.

Common Mistakes

  • Using positive framing for an intended ordinary complaint.

    Berkat banjir, rumah saya rusak.
    Gara-gara banjir, rumah saya rusak.

For an ordinary complaint about damage, gara-gara or akibat matches the intended meaning. Berkat presents the flood as helpful and therefore sounds ironic here. It is valid irony, not a grammatical error; it mismatches the nonironic complaint intended in this exercise.
