setelah + Clause

After with Setelah

Level 2

Setelah means after. It places the main event later than the event or point named by its complement: setelah mulai bekerja means after beginning work, not necessarily after finishing all the work.

How It Works

The conjunction setelah is the standard way to sequence events in Indonesian. It functions as a bridge between a subordinate clause and a main clause. A formal synonym for this is sesudah.

1. Sentence Placement and Punctuation
You can place the setelah clause at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. Note that when the clause starts the sentence, a comma is required to separate it from the main clause:

  • Setelah makan, saya tidur. (After eating, I sleep.)
  • Saya tidur setelah makan. (I sleep after eating.)

2. Grammatical Flexibility
Setelah is versatile in what follows it:

  • With a Clause: Setelah saya tiba... (After I arrive...)
  • With a Verb: Setelah tiba... (After arriving...) — Use this when the subject is the same in both parts of the sentence.
  • With a Noun: Setelah rapat... (After the meeting...)

3. Adverbial Use
To say "Afterwards" or "After that" to start a new sentence, use setelah itu. This is the standard formal choice for starting a sentence. Setelahnya also means afterwards or after it, and can introduce a later step or appear in a phrase such as beberapa hari setelahnya. It is not restricted to a clause-final position.

Examples (4)

  1. Setelah mandi, dia sarapan.

    After showering, he had breakfast.

Word by Word: After bathe, he eat-breakfast.

Here, 'setelah' is followed by a verb. The subject (he) is understood to be the same for both actions.

  2. Saya akan menelepon Anda setelah saya tiba di kantor.

I will call you after I arrive at the office.

Word by Word: I will call you after I arrive at office.

In this example, 'setelah' is followed by a full clause (subject + verb + location).

  3. Setelah kejadian itu, dia menjadi lebih pendiam.

After that incident, he became quieter.

Word by Word: After incident that, he become more quiet.

This shows 'setelah' followed by a noun phrase ('kejadian itu').

  4. Kami pergi ke bioskop. Setelah itu, kami makan malam.

We went to the cinema. After that, we had dinner.

Word by Word: We go to cinema. After that, we eat night.

Note the use of 'setelah itu' to link two separate sentences.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'setelah' alone as a sentence connector (afterwards).

    Saya makan. Setelah, saya pergi.
Saya makan. Setelah itu, saya pergi.

Afterwards can be expressed with setelah itu. Bare setelah does not supply the reference point in this standalone connector; setelahnya is another form that refers back to a preceding event.

  • Omitting the comma between the initial after-clause and the main clause.

Setelah anak makan ibu mencuci piring.
Setelah anak makan, ibu mencuci piring.

The comma marks the clause boundary. When different people eat and wash, naming anak makes the eater clear. With an omitted subject, context must identify the actor; the usual same-subject model is a useful default, not a reason to label every contextually clear omission wrong.
