So and So That (Svo Að)

Level 4

Talaðu hægt svo að ég skilji. (Speak slowly so that I understand.) Það var kalt, svo að við fórum heim. (It was cold, so we went home.)

How It Works

Purpose: so that + subjunctive. Use it for the goal of an action. After a present or imperative main clause, use the present subjunctive; after a past one, the past subjunctive:

  • Talaðu hægt svo að ég skilji. (Speak slowly so that I understand.)
  • Ég skrifa þetta niður svo að ég gleymi því ekki. (I'm writing this down so that I don't forget it.)
  • Ég fór snemma svo að ég næði rútunni. (I left early so that I would catch the bus.)

This is close to til að + infinitive, which you use when the subject stays the same: Ég fór snemma til að ná rútunni.

Result: so + indicative. After a comma, svo að with the indicative gives what happened as a result:

  • Það var kalt, svo að við fórum heim. (It was cold, so we went home.)
  • Ég var svangur, svo að ég fékk mér samloku. (I was hungry, so I had a sandwich.)

svo alone. In speech að is often dropped: Talaðu hægt svo ég skilji. Be careful: when svo means then (next), it is an adverb and the verb comes right after it: Ég keypti brauð og svo fór ég heim. (I bought bread and then went home.)

For so cold that, see svo ... að.

Examples (5)

  1. Talaðu hægt svo að ég skilji.

Speak slowly so that I understand.

Word by Word: Speak slowly so that I understand.

    skilji is subjunctive: a purpose.

  2. Ég skrifa þetta niður svo að ég gleymi því ekki.

I'm writing this down so that I don't forget it.

Word by Word: I write this down so that I forget it not.

  3. Ég fór snemma svo að ég næði rútunni.

I left early so that I would catch the bus.

Word by Word: I went early so that I reached the-bus.

After a past main clause, the purpose uses the past subjunctive næði.

  4. Það var kalt, svo að við fórum heim.

It was cold, so we went home.

Word by Word: It was cold, so that we went home.

fórum is indicative: a result that happened.

  5. Ég var svangur, svo að ég fékk mér samloku.

I was hungry, so I had a sandwich.

Word by Word: I was hungry, so that I got me sandwich.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the indicative for a purpose.

Talaðu hægt svo að ég skil.
Talaðu hægt svo að ég skilji.

A purpose is something you want to happen, so it takes the subjunctive: skilji, not skil.

  • Using the indicative when you mean so that.

Ég fór snemma svo að ég náði rútunni.
Ég fór snemma svo að ég næði rútunni.

With the indicative náði the sentence means I left early, so I caught the bus: a result. To say so that I would catch it, use the subjunctive næði.
