svo ... að
So ... That (Svo ... Að)
Það var svo kalt að vatnið fraus. (It was so cold that the water froze.)
How It Works
The pattern. svo + adjective or adverb, then að + what happened:
- Það var svo kalt að vatnið fraus. (It was so cold that the water froze.)
- Ég var svo þreyttur að ég sofnaði strax. (I was so tired that I fell asleep right away.)
- Hún talaði svo hratt að ég skildi ekki neitt. (She spoke so fast that I didn't understand anything.)
With nouns, use svo mikið (so much) or svo margir (so many): Það voru svo margir að við fengum ekki sæti. (There were so many people that we didn't get a seat.)
Agreement. svo never changes, but the adjective still agrees, as in adjective agreement: Hún var svo þreytt að ...
Indicative for real results. When the result really happens, use the indicative: fraus, sofnaði, skildi. When the main clause is negative, the result did not happen, so it takes the subjunctive: Hann er ekki svo vitlaus að hann trúi þessu. (He is not so foolish that he would believe this.)
Compare too. of + adjective + til að means too ... to: Það var of kalt til að synda. (It was too cold to swim.)

Common Mistakes
Using mjög instead of svo.
Það var mjög kalt að vatnið fraus.Það var svo kalt að vatnið fraus.mjög means very and cannot introduce a result. Use svo before the adjective when an að-clause follows.
Forgetting that the adjective after svo still agrees.
Hún var svo þreyttur að hún sofnaði strax.Hún var svo þreytt að hún sofnaði strax.svo never changes, but the adjective agrees with hún: þreytt, not þreyttur.
