gætirðu / mætti ég
Polite Requests (Gætirðu, Mætti Ég)
Use the past subjunctive for polite requests: Gætirðu hjálpað mér? (Could you help me?) Mætti ég fá vatnsglas? (Could I have a glass of water?)
How It Works
Three polite forms.
- gæti (from geta) + supine: Gætirðu hjálpað mér? Gæti ég fengið reikninginn? (Could I have the bill?)
- mætti (from mega) + infinitive: Mætti ég fá vatnsglas? Mættum við sitja hérna? (Could we sit here?)
- vildi (from vilja) + infinitive: Ég vildi gjarnan fá kaffi. (I would like a coffee, please.) gjarnan means gladly.
Forms. gæti: ég gæti, þú gætir, hún gæti, við gætum, þið gætuð, þau gætu. mætti: mætti, mættir, mætti, mættum, mættuð, mættu. With þú, the joined form is usual in speech: gætirðu, mættirðu, just like ertu/viltu/talarðu.
How polite? From direct to gentle: Viltu hjálpa mér? → Geturðu hjálpað mér? → Gætirðu hjálpað mér? When ordering, Má ég fá ...? is normal, and Mætti ég fá ...? is a little more careful. Another friendly way to ask is Værirðu til í að ...? (Would you mind ...?): Værirðu til í að loka glugganum?
Would you ...? myndi also makes polite questions: Myndirðu vilja koma með? (Would you like to come along?)
Be careful with vildi að. Ég vildi gjarnan fá + infinitive asks for something. Ég vildi að + a clause is a wish: Ég vildi að ég gæti komið (I wish I could come). See ég vildi að.

Common Mistakes
Using the infinitive after gæti.
Gætirðu hjálpa mér?Gætirðu hjálpað mér?geta takes the supine in every form, including gæti: hjálpað, not hjálpa.
Adding að after mætti.
Mætti ég að fá vatnsglas?Mætti ég fá vatnsglas?mega takes the infinitive directly, without að.
Adding að after vildi in a request.
Ég vildi að fá kaffi.Ég vildi gjarnan fá kaffi.vilja takes the infinitive without að. Ég vildi að needs a whole clause and makes a wish, as in Ég vildi að ég gæti komið.
