איתי / איתך / איתו

With Me and with You

Level 2

איתי means with me, איתך means with you, איתו means with him, and איתה means with her. These are common personal accompaniment forms corresponding to עם.

How It Works

A Companion

Use איתי, איתך, איתו, איתה, איתנו, אתכם, אתכן, איתם and איתן in everyday accompaniment phrases. The masculine and feminine readings of singular איתך differ. In full spelling, the plural addressee forms are אתכם and אתכן; they have no extra י before the silent sheva.

Learn the Whole Form

Do not build a personal form as עם אני. With a noun or name, עם stays a separate word: עם דנה. With a pronoun, use a learned form such as איתה.

With or an Object?

אני רואה אותו means I see him. אני הולך איתו means I go with him. The small spelling difference carries a real relationship difference. More formal עימי and עימו are also found in modern writing; they are not the main everyday forms here.

Examples (4)

  1. דנה הולכת איתי.

    Dana is going with me.

    איתי names her companion.

  2. אני הולכת איתה.

    I am going with her.

    The companion is female.

  3. הם באים איתנו.

    They are coming with us.

    איתנו means with us.

  4. אני מדבר איתך.

    I am talking with you.

The unpointed form can address either gender.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an independent pronoun directly after עם in ordinary accompaniment.

    דנה הולכת עם אני.
    דנה הולכת איתי.

Use the personal accompaniment form איתי.
