מ־ / מן

From

Level 1

Attached מ and separate מן express from. They can name a source or starting point.

How It Works

An Attached Source

Write the prefix together with the word: מהבית, מבית הספר or מירושלים. With a personal pronoun use a learned form such as ממני, from me, and ממך, from you.

Read the Vowel With the Word

The prefix has different pointed forms. Compare מִבַּיִת and מֵהַבַּיִת. Following consonants and vowel marks affect the standard reading; do not pronounce every מ-prefix identically by a letter-only rule.

A Separate מן

מן הבית conveys from the house with a separate word. The separate מן and the attached מ־ can both name a source. The same prefix also appears in comparisons such as גדול ממני, bigger than me; that relationship is taught with comparisons.

Examples (4)

  1. אני מישראל.

    I am from Israel.

מ attaches to the place name.

  2. היא יוצאת מהבית.

    She is leaving the house.

מ appears before the article ה.

  3. הם באים מן העיר.

They are coming from the city.

Separate מן names the source city.

  4. הספר ממני.

    The book is from me.

    The personal form is ממני.

Common Mistakes
