אותי / אותך / אותו
Direct Object Pronouns
אותי means me, אותו means him or it, and אותה means her or it. These forms replace a complete definite direct object phrase.
How It Works
The Personal Forms
Learn אותי, אותך, אותו, אותה, אותנו, אתכם, אתכן, אותם and אותן. Unpointed אותך covers male and female singular addressees, with different pronunciations. Choose the person and gender of the object, not of the speaker.
Replace the Whole Object
היא רואה אותי means she sees me. For a book already mentioned, אני קורא אותו means I am reading it because ספר is masculine. A feminine object such as מחברת is referred to with אותה.
Keep Other Relationships
Use these forms only where the verb takes a direct object. אני עוזר לה, I help her, keeps the verb’s ל-relationship rather than changing it to אותה. The accompaniment form איתו means with him and is distinct from אותו.
