Relative Clauses with Resumed Pronouns

Level 5

A relative clause often retains a personal form after a preposition, as in הספר שדיברתי עליו. That reference points back to the described noun.

How It Works

Prepositional Relationships

Learn the whole patterns האישה שדיברתי איתה and הבית שגרנו בו. The preposition and personal form preserve the verb’s ordinary relationship. Choose the personal form to match the described noun.

Direct Objects Behave Differently

הספר שקראתי commonly omits the corresponding direct-object pronoun. הספר שקראתי אותו is also encountered, particularly in conversational usage, but the additional pronoun is not required in every ordinary direct-object relative. A blanket delete-all-pronouns rule is equally misleading.

Follow the Reference

עליו can refer to a masculine noun and עליה to a feminine noun. The relative clause still has its own actor: המחברת שדנה כתבה בה identifies a notebook used by Dana. Separate the described noun’s role from the subordinate subject’s role.

Examples (4)

  1. זה הבית שגרנו בו.

This is the house we lived in.

    בו preserves the in relationship.

  2. זו האישה שדיברתי איתה.

This is the woman I spoke with.

איתה refers back to the woman as companion.

  3. זה הספר שדיברתי עליו.

This is the book I talked about.

עליו refers back to the masculine book.

  4. זו המחברת שדנה כתבה בה.

This is the notebook Dana wrote in.

בה refers to the notebook; Dana is the writer.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the wrong gender in a prepositional reference to the feminine notebook.

    זו המחברת שדנה כתבה בו.
    זו המחברת שדנה כתבה בה.

The personal reference בה agrees with מחברת, not with the writer.
