לולא / אלמלא
If It Were Not for
לולא and אלמלא can mean if not, were it not for or had it not been for. Their ordinary negative condition is already built into the connector.
How It Works
A Noun Condition
לולא הגשם and אלמלא העזרה שלך use noun phrases. The following clause states the hypothetical result: אלמלא העזרה שלך, לא הייתי מסיימת.
A Clause Condition
אלמלא עזרת לי, לא הייתי מסיים means if you had not helped me, I would not have finished. The connector supplies the negative hypothetical relation to the helping event; the verb and context identify the actual participants and time.
Condition and Result
The connector supplies the negative condition. The result can be separately negative, as in לא הייתי מסיים. In these examples the condition contains no extra לא; do not insert it automatically because English if not contains a separate not. Read the condition and result as separate parts of the sentence.
