Counterfactual Conditions

Level 5

אילו and לו can mean if in hypothetical or contrary-to-fact conditions. The result commonly uses היה with a participle or another modal construction.

How It Works

Hypothetical Present

אילו הייתי גרה קרוב יותר, הייתי הולכת ברגל imagines a different current home location. Past-shaped הייתי does not force the hypothetical situation into historical time.

A Missed Past Situation

אילו ידעתי אתמול, הייתי מתקשרת describes a past condition that did not hold and its unreal result. The time phrase and surrounding context distinguish it from an unreal present condition.

Connector and Construction

לו is another connector in this construction: לו היה לי זמן. The written לו can also be a personal ל-form meaning to him, so sentence structure identifies its job. Everyday אם also appears in hypothetical speech; careful אילו/לו usage should be learned without pretending that every conversational אם sentence is an open real condition.

    If we had room, we would invite you.

    לו introduces a hypothetical condition.
